A shocking incident has come to light from Shivamogga district of Karnataka, where an inmate lodged in jail swallowed a mobile phone out of fear of getting caught. Later, doctors at the hospital performed surgery and removed the mobile phone from his stomach. This incident has raised serious questions about the security arrangements of the prison administration. The police have started investigating the matter.
This incident came to light on June 24, when a 30-year-old prisoner named Daulat alias Gunda, lodged in a high-security prison in Shivamogga, complained of severe abdominal pain. Upon inquiry, he revealed that he had swallowed something. When he was taken for treatment to the government McGann Hospital, the X-ray report revealed that there was a mobile phone in his stomach. After surgery, the doctors successfully removed the phone.
Media reports state that Daulat, who is serving a 10-year sentence, himself informed the jail staff that he had swallowed something, which was causing him unbearable stomach pain. When he was admitted to the hospital, the X-ray clearly showed that there was a mobile phone in his stomach, approximately 3 inches in length and 1 inch in width. With his consent, the doctors performed surgery and removed the phone, which was then handed over to jail authorities in a sealed envelope on July 8.
After this shocking incident, jail officer Ranganath P lodged a complaint at the Tunganagar police station. The police have registered a case against the prisoner under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Simultaneously, an investigation has begun into how a mobile phone managed to enter the prison despite such strict surveillance. It is suspected that the phone might have been smuggled inside with the connivance of jail staff.
A joint team of the police and prison administration is now investigating the security setup inside the jail. Efforts are being made to determine whether any staff member helped the inmate or if there was a lapse in security. CCTV footage is being reviewed and the jail staff is being questioned. It is also being examined whether such incidents have occurred previously and were suppressed.
